a)      The Key to Supporting Parents of Special Needs Children

This workshop brings both educational & personal experiences of working with & being a parent of a child with special needs.  It outlines the seven stages of the grief process that a parent with special needs move through & will touch on the complicated labyrinth that parents have to travel & navigate to get support services for their children.  The key to supporting these families is to have an understanding of what they are going through in order to provide effective support.

Nicole Beaudry has worked in the child care field since 1996 in a variety of communities in the Yukon & Ontario.  Nicole has held many positions in the ECE field & currently is an Educational Assistant for the department of Education. Nicole also is a parent of a child with special needs.

b)     Inside-Out: Embracing nature in everyday curriculum

This workshop is sure to get your green on!  We'll explore how a different perspective on curriculum can provide a world of different experiences for your children!  Be prepared to enjoy the outdoors rain or shine as we explore the neighbourhood around the conference centre & consider the impact of physical activity, curiosity & spiritual well-being on young children.

Sherri Armstrong & Kate Swales are both instructors in Yukon College’s Early Childhood Development Program. They both enjoy playing & spending time with young children, often even more than regular adult peeps.   Spending time outdoors is a natural activity for both of these women & they really enjoy sharing this happy vibe with others.

c)      The Leader’s Journey: From Mindset to Impact

Participants in this workshop will recognize the relationship between their mindsets, behaviours, & the results they get by identifying a current leadership challenge they are experiencing.  They will then transform that challenge into a more desirable result, & identify the behaviours & mindset needed to achieve that result.

Handle with Care: Promoting the Mental Health of Young Yukon

A parent’s or caregiver’s attentive caring & responsive interaction with young children helps to develop a framework for healthy growth & development which is so critical to a child’s future success.  Handle with Care is based on the premise that every parent or caregiver wants what is best for their child. The program helps them realize this goal through practical knowledge, skills, & simple strategies that adults can use every day.

The original Handle with Care program began in 2002 through a HRSDC funded project sponsored by the Canadian Mental Health Association, National Office &, from 2005 to the present, the Hincks-Dellcrest Centre in Toronto. Laurie McPherson (Manitoba), Leona Corniere (Yukon ) & Sherri Armstrong (Yukon) have assisted the project’s development of resources & training materials that support the mental health promotion of children from birth to 6 years in community-based child care.  The current phase of the project, funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Innovation Strategy for mental health promotion, aims to evaluate the Handle with Care strategies which will be shared directly with parents & caregivers in four sites across Canada: Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island & the Yukon

Sherri Armstrong has received a Bachelor of Physical Education in Pre-Adolescent Studies. She has a passion for improving the lives of young children & their families. She has been working with the Handle with Care Program since the beginning. Sherri has been an instructor in the Early Childhood Development Program for many years. She likes to see young children & their family active & enjoying the outdoors. As a long time Yukon resident, I love to explore the natural beauty of the Yukon especially with my dog.

Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP)

HELP’s interdisciplinary approach reaches from ‘cell to society’.  They study everything from how early experience affects the development of the brain, to children’s development over time, to family policy.  HELP builds on a range of population health approaches, including social determinants of health.  HELP takes a life course approach, accepting the early years as the first & most critical in determining life-long health & wellbeing.

Joanne Schroeder studied social work at the University of British Columbia.  Currently she is the deputy director at HELP and has played a foundational role as Community Development Manager in the translation of HELP’s early child development research to communities.  She is also the leader author of the Communities for Children: A Toolkit for Action published by the HELP & a contributor to a variety of other publications.  Joanne was the National Lead Fellow for the Council for Early Child Development (CECD) & as part of that role managed the Pan-Canadian EDI initiative.

Jim Mustard

Jim Mustard is currently a town counselor for Inverness County & has worked with many organizations & people across Canada to improve the opportunity for healthy child development. With intense support provided to community infrastructure that directly benefits young children Jim is changing the Cape Breton & Canadian landscape.  Jim walks the talk that equity from the start not only provides babies with healthy beginnings but communities with future wealth.

 Why Play Matters

For the past decade public attention in Canada has been focused on the critical importance of early experience & ensuring that children, particularly disadvantaged children, are ready for school. The expansion in the provision of public early learning programs in Canada is one of a series of significant changes in both the social & physical environments in which early childhood unfolds in this country that is affecting young children’s opportunities for play. There is concern that the decline of opportunities for unstructured free play in the early years may be a contributing factor in rising childhood obesity levels, as well as increased levels of anxiety & stress in young children.

Jane Hewes is Chair of the Early Childhood Development Program at Grant MacEwan University & a longtime advocate of children's rights & high quality, community- based early learning & child care programs.
